Super 8's day!

(above)Despite the low turnout, cricket was the winner on Saturday

Bemboka Cricket Club got the cricket season off to an unofficial start on Saturday with their Super 8’s day. Four teams made up this years lineup- Tathra, Bermagui, Bega Devils and Bemboka, and they were greeted with a sunny day with a gentle westerly breeze. The Bega Athletics field was the venue for the day and the grounds were a picture.

The day began with the most accurate throw competition- Adam Blacka showing up the field with his first throw until Duncan O’Reilly pinched the prize with the last throw of the competition. The day then got underway in earnest- Bermagui taking on Tathra in the first match of the tournament. Bermi were the best presented side of the day, but in a close contest, it was last year’s A grade Champions Tathra who just fell over the line for the win. Bermi made up for the close loss with a win over Bemboka in the next game and the Bega Devils took out Tathra in the other game.

All of the pool games were won by 15 runs or less, making this type of competition exciting to watch.

It was good to see one of the elder statesmen of Far South Coast Cricket, Dick Blacka, toss the walking stick aside and pick up the bat- looks like he’s as keen as ever! The whole day was played in the type of comedy spirit that befits such a contest and there were plenty of laughs, sixes, dropped catches and a streaker to boot!

Bermagui took on a hybrid Tathra lineup in the final and took the win in another close game- one can’t help but think the Bermi boys are going to be strong in the B Grade competition this year.

Bemboka Cricket Club would like to thank all those generous sponsors of the day- Bega Betta Electrical (an amazing donation of a Sony MP3 player for a raffle!), Bega SportsPower, Dave and Bronwyn Allen at Bemboka Hotel Motel, Linden And Angela at the Bemboka Pie Shop, Bega AutoPro, Tim and Ellen at Bega Barbeque’s Galore, Ryan Pauline Barber, Priceline Chemist, Allens, Mal’s Pizza Shop, Specialised Automotive- up (The ARB Boys), Gloria Jean’s Coffee, 3 great new businesses in town, Beauty and Elegance, Helen’s Topknot, and Bega Repco all of which made the day more enjoyable for those who were lucky to win something! It is a credit to local businesses that they continue to support local sporting clubs, so please support them and shop locally!

Thanks also goes to the Mitchell’s and the O’Reilly gals who worked tirelessly on the day as well. Feel free to contact Paul Mitchell at Tradelink Plumbing or Duncan O’Reilly if you would like a ticket in the MP3 Raffle (64930371).

Next year’s plans are already underway for an expanded Super 8’s- teams from Eurobodalla and Monaro showing interest, so keep an eye out for the date and we look forward to seeing you there!

Bemboka Super 8's day approaches!

(above)The queue for entries looked good this week...

With the cricket season fast approaching, we've knocked together an Eight a side tournament for a fundraiser to get some money in. We should get at least 6 teams from commitments made so far, so it should be fun, and we hope to expand on whatever we do next year!

Look out for the day review here soon...
